Crisis Communication Project (Part 2)

I have been working on my research for the flooding communication that occurred in Valley City during the flooding. I have found that most people listened to the radio as their main source of getting valuable information from the people i have talked to. They found that radio was something that almost everyone has and is easily accessible almost anywhere you go unlike TV, newspapers, and internet. A lot of them also enjoyed hearing the news from the mayor herself or from the Army Corps of Engineers Rich Schueneman on the cfs levels of Baldhill Dam and what to expect for output levels. They felt the radio really connected them to people in their own environment that knew exactly what they were dealing with and made them feel more comfortable. After analyzing the situation and from what people have told me i am thinking that the radio was the most popular medium used. Due to it being localized, accurate, and updated on what was going on at all times in Valley City.

  1. Your findings seem to about what I found as well. There were a lot of people that relyed on the radio as almsot everyone has some sort of a radio. There is a lot of people tha thave internet and cell phones that receive text messages but its critical to reach EVERYONE in a time of crisis. You have to think of the elderly that may not be quite up to date on technology and you still have to reach them with the important information. Valley City did a good job of reaching everyone during the flood. They even had peopel going door to door when the sewer was being strained.

  2. Yes, radio was a very good medium of communication to use because you could listen to it in the house or in your car. Everyone pretty much has a radio so it is easy to reach people. Also, it seems like in a time of crisis when one person hears something on the radio they will call up their friends and tell them to listen to what they are saying on the radio.

  3. Radio sounds like it would have been the best way for Valley City and the immediate area. But for other people it wouldn’t have worked so well. Like for Valley City State University students who didn’t live within the range of the radio station. It would have been very difficult for them to receive information through the radio. It was good that the residents were able to receive their information so easily from the radio.
