Retire on a Cruise Ship

Retire on a Cruise Ship
Waterfront Lifestyles International is a lodging company that is currently taking reservations for their mid-sized ship retirement condos. They claim it will cost less than most senior independent-living facilities. The ship they are building first for condos is named Algeria and is a 300-foot ship. Other perks that come with living on the ship is that each month it will make weekend cruises each to regional attractions. Some of these include trips to the Bahamas, shuttle launches, or shopping centers at Palm Beach.
The company feels that with the depressed economy cruises are the future of retirement. Not only because of the prices, but due to that retirees are usually looking for viable beachfront property to settle down once they are done working. The appeal of living on a ship has a certain appeal to some retirees because they would have to pay exorbitant prices for a demanded water front view, which is what you end up paying for when buying a lake front house. That and Algeria will be the first ship that actually allows purchasers to own a room on a mid-sized ship for under a half-million dollars. With anyone being able to buy a room now, and rent it until they are ready to retire. One major difference with Algeria is that living on there, is that residents actually own the ship. So, they will have a say where they travel. The ship will have a lot of stuff that regular larger vessels have including spa, workout room, gift shop, cigar bar, night club, dining room, beauty shop, and library.
Waterfront International also plans on locating additional retirement ship in Tampa, Jacksonville, Palm Beach, and Sarasota in the future. The concept is not new for condos on ships, but just has not been under half a million dollars until Algeria. Most of the other retirement ships that have been built usually are too expensive costing over one million dollars and remain unaffordable for most people. I personally think it would be really nice to retire on a ship. However, I do not know how easy it would be to visit family and then try to plan in advance when and where the ship will port next and try to get there. This article relates to our book because it shows how values are always important to us. As people age they become even more important to us. And what is more important than when people retire. When I retire I hope to find somewhere affordable and fun like this boat, only with a little less traveling.

  1. I think would be a cool way to retire...for like a month! After that I am not sure I could stand not having a permanent residence. Some place that you can actually call home and have friends come over for lunch or dinner without a months’ notice. You know how you get sick of being a vacation towards the last day, I'm pretty sure I would get that feeling retiring here. Like you said, how in the world would you get to see your family? If their car broke down on their way to see you and by the time they got to the port your ship had already left. Then you would have to figure out the next stop they could see you. This just doesn't seem as cool as it first seems like.

  2. I think this sounds amazing, but I’m not sure if I could spend more than a few months living on a boat. I would have to have my own house on land, near a city with shopping and other entertainment. The boat sounds like a dream and would be wonderful for going to the different islands and beaches though. The other tough part for me would be not being able to see my family as much as I would like. Also, like you said planning would be hard to meet family if you don’t know where your next destination is going to be.

  3. I think that it is an great idea. I would love for my grandma to live in a retirement condo on a cruse ship. I believe that most old people get very depressed with their life style as they get older. I mean who would want to live in a retirement home for the rest of their days when you could be one of the "residents actually own the ship". that "they will have a say where they travel." this to me would be SWEEEEEEET!

  4. I have checked this out. The ship will be docked at one spot. The first one will be at Miami where there is sunshine and warmth all year round. Conveniently located with parking
space for your car and additional storage areas for your extra stuffs. You own your condo on the ship and you are part owner of the ship. It is an an independent living retirement community on board a modern beautiful mid-size ship. It is not too big a community so you get to know your neighbors. There are plenty of open spaces, lounges, library, game room, gift shops, gym, everything a cruise ship offers. You can socialize all you want or you can find a quiet nook to savor some solitary moments. Household chores become memories. Meet and chat with your fellow retirees daily over breakfasts, lunches and dinners that are included in your reasonable monthly maintenance fee. Plan your week-end cruise itineraries. Talk about your day. Meet to discuss homeowners association matters. Organize/enjoy activities of interests to you such as dance lessons, arts and crafts, or woodworking projects etc. Should you want to go into town, all conveniences are around the corner.

You will have peace of mind regarding your healthcare needs because you are living in a complete retirement community with doctors, nurses and other medical conveniences.

Can you imagine when your grand kids come to visit you (oh, there are some units reserved for homeowners’ visitors!) how proud you will be showing off your ship in all its splendor?

All for less than what a traditional retirement facility will cost.

I am seriously considering this, since I don't have millions to buy the super luxurious residence on a ship, but I love the ocean and love to travel/cruise. Yes this will be week-end cruises only and a yearly longer trip. For a modest sum I enjoy frequent cruising without all the planning and packing, right from my own home! How cool is that!
